MERLOT Content Builder
The MERLOT Content Builder, previously the Carnegie Foundation KEEP Toolkit, is an easy-to-use tool for creating text and importing documents, photos and video pre-structured web pages to allow you to create basic learning materials. The page you create is called a Snapshot. A Snapshot is a web page, or a linked (stitched) series of web pages that provide an easily navigable website - usually intended for instructional purposes.
Typically a Snapshot has a title "box" and a series of 3-6 boxes arrayed underneath, each of which describes or shows some other aspect of the work. Snapshots use tables for its layout. Images used in snapshots can have alt tags to describe an image. These appears when the mouse is rolled over the image on a Web page. They are important for people who view pages in text-only mode. Forms within snapshots have labels for form elements.
Within the MERLOT Content Builder, you can link to other pages (other Snapshots, web sites, or documents) and upload and insert images and video into your snapshot pages. You can “stitch” together several single Snapshots to form a website (or Stitched Group), complete with navigation bar. Anytime you login to MERLOT, you can see the Snapshots you have created by accessing the Content Builder. You can also share your Snapshots directly with other MERLOT users by easily defining and contributing metadata of your work to the MERLOT collection, or provide URL's of your work to others so they can access them directly.
To begin using the Content Builder
- Go to the MERLOT the home page (www.merlot.org), log in to MERLOT. If you are not a member of MERLOT, membership is free. Register at http://www.merlot.org/merlot/join.htm
- From the home page or your profile page, click on "Access the Content Builder" (see figures below).
- At the "Content Builder Dashboard" start creating Snapshots. For more information, download the QuickStart Guide.
