Member Acceptable Information Use Policy
1.0 Scope
MERLOT is a free and open resource designed for higher education community members and others interested in online teaching and learning. MERLOT is built on the collaboration of its partners, registered members, users, and MERLOT-sponsored event participants and supporters. MERLOT provides access to its website and materials and services only for personal, professional, and non-commercial purposes as set forth in this policy. MERLOT respects the privacy of our website visitors, registered members, and sponsored event attendees; this policy demonstrates our commitment to that privacy.
This Acceptable Information Use Policy (AIUP) policy concerns MERLOT’s treatment of MERLOT Information – defined in this policy as “any and all personal information (e.g., first and last names, email address, other addresses, telephone numbers, institutions or affiliations, etc.) collected via MERLOT websites for membership registration, for attendance/participation in the MERLOT International Conference (MIC), or for any other MERLOT-sponsored or endorsed event.”
This policy defines how such information may and may not be used by MERLOT partners, members, non members, sponsors, and exhibitors at MERLOT-sponsored or -endorsed events including the MIC. MERLOT’s goal is to protect the MERLOT community from illegal or irresponsible use of MERLOT Information.
2.0 Permissible and Impermissible Use of MERLOT Information
◦ MERLOT Information may only be used for the purposes of collaboration and inquiry basis between individual MERLOT members.
◦ MERLOT does not permit the use of any MERLOT Information for any form of bulk mailing or for contacting any group of any number of MERLOT members.
◦ MERLOT Information may not be used as a contact source for communication about commercial products and services to any individual or group of MERLOT members.
3.0 Permissible and Impermissible Use of Event Participant Information
MERLOT recognizes and appreciates the contribution of commercial supporters in MERLOT-sponsored events such as the MIC and acknowledges the business motivation for their participation. However, this policy proscribes any commercial entity, including commercial supporters of MERLOT-sponsored events, from harvesting online MERLOT member or event participant data for any reason.
In order to support the commercial sponsors of MERLOT events, MERLOT agrees to the following:
◦ MERLOT will publish the name of each sponsor with a hyperlink to the sponsor’s website, in the Grapevine issue immediately following the sponsored event in order to acknowledge their participation. For MIC sponsors, this is in addition to sponsor information published in the online and printed conference program.
◦ MERLOT will provide each sponsor with a list of event participant names and affiliations (without email addresses).
◦ During a MERLOT sponsored event, sponsors may collect any information voluntarily offered to them from an event participant, provided that the information collection methodology has been pre approved by MERLOT event organizers.
For questions about this policy, please contact the webmaster@merlot.org.
